Firefighters put out brush fireBy: Star beacon ASHTABULA - - City firefighters were called Monday afternoon to a brush fire in the area of the old tannery building. Upon arrival at 2:18 p.m., firefighters saw smoke behind the houses on Cleveland Avenue, in the vicinity of Newberry Lane, according to the fire department's report. City police officers directed traffic around the fire trucks as firefighters extinguished the blaze with a hand-line and wet down the field, the report said. "Things are pretty wet right now," Police Capt. Gerald Cornelius said. "If the field would have been dry, it could have been quite a fire." Firefighters left the scene at 3 p.m., the report stated. |
