Ashtabula city firefighters have busy afternoonBy: Star Beacon ASHTABULA - - City firefighters had a busy afternoon responding to two separate minor fires Wednesday within an hour of each. Lt. Tod Wilms said the first call came in at 4:37 p.m. at 4507 West Ave. for a minor kitchen fire, but smoke from the blaze filled most of the residence. The firefighters used a water can unit to extinguish the fire caused from food being cooked on a stove. "We used ventilator fans to get the smoke out. Then at 5:24 p.m. we went to 1419 Gladding Ave. in the Harbor district. The homeowner actually had the fire out by the time we got there," Wilms said. The man was cooking on his kitchen stove, Wilms said. A pan of oil being heated apparently dripped on a burner next to a pan of vegetables being cooked. The fire department did not have a damage estimate for either fire at this time. "I have a feeling we aren't done for the night yet as things are going," Wilms said. |
